He was best known as a founding member and singer of the pop-rock band , achieving fame in the 1960s with hits such as “Happy Together,” “She’d Rather Be With Me,” and “Elenore.” Volman’s distinctive harmonies helped define the group’s signature sound, with “Happy Together” reaching number one on the Billboard charts in 1967. After The Turtles disbanded, Volman as the ‘Flo’ (or ‘The Phlorescent Leech’) and bandmate Howard Kaylan formed the vocal parody & harmony duo , collaborating with Frank Zappa’s The Mothers of Invention and providing backing vocals for artists including Bruce Springsteen and Alice Cooper.
